Is the AIGP Certification Worth It? A Realistic Look

Companies are adopting AI faster than they are building the rules around it. That gap has created demand for people who can turn “responsible AI” from a slogan into policies, reviews and accountability. The IAPP’s Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) is a credential aimed at that work.

Who tends to benefit most

  • Privacy and compliance professionals extending their remit to AI systems

  • Risk, audit and legal teams who now review AI vendors and internal models

  • Product and project managers who need to ask the right questions before launch

  • Technical staff moving toward governance or policy roles

Who may not need it

If your work is purely hands-on model building and you have no governance, risk or compliance responsibilities, a technical credential may serve you better. The AIGP is about oversight and decision-making, not coding models.

What it can and can’t do

A certification shows structured knowledge. It does not replace experience, and it doesn’t guarantee a job or pay rise. Its value is greatest when you pair it with real work, such as drafting an AI use policy or running an impact assessment at your organization.

A quick decision test

  1. Does my job or target job involve AI risk, policy or compliance?

  2. Do employers I’m targeting mention AI governance in listings?

  3. Can I apply what I learn within six months?

If you answered yes to at least two, the AIGP is worth serious consideration. If you’d like structured preparation, see our IAPP AIGP certification training . Before paying for anything, confirm the current exam fee and requirements at iapp.org.
